The short answer: A musty smell that surges when your AC first kicks on almost always means moisture and microbial growth somewhere in the air path. The four common sources are a clogged condensate drain, a dirty evaporator coil, contaminated ductwork, and a loaded filter that froze the coil. Each one has a different fix, and only some of them are ours to sell.
That last sentence matters. Start with the startup-smell test
Before anything else, pay attention to the timing of the odor. This one observation narrows the diagnosis more than anything else you can do without tools:
- The smell surges when the system starts, then fades after a few minutes. The source is in the air distribution path: the coil, the drain pan area, or the ductwork. The first blast of air is pushing out gases that accumulated while the system sat idle.
- The smell is constant whether the AC runs or not. The source is probably in the room or the building itself, not the HVAC system. Check for water damage, a hidden leak, or damp carpet before calling anyone about your ducts.
That on-with-the-blower pattern is the tell that environmental inspectors use, and you can run the test yourself tonight.
What causes the musty smell when the AC turns on?
1. A clogged condensate drain line or drain pan
This is the most common single source. Your AC pulls humidity out of the air, and that water leaves through a small drain line. The warm, wet inside of that line grows algae and biofilm, and when it clogs, water sits stagnant in the pan under the coil. Stagnant water in a dark cabinet is a mold factory, and the blower carries the smell to every room.
The honest part: this is not a duct cleaning problem. A clogged drain line needs an HVAC service call, and sometimes just a wet vacuum and a flush. During one of our dryer vent jobs, our crew noticed standing water in the customer’s AC drip pan up in the attic, vacuumed it out, and flagged the problem at no charge. 2. A dirty or moldy evaporator coil
The coil is the cold heart of your AC. It runs wet all season by design, sits in the dark, and collects the dust that gets past your filter. Wet surface, darkness, organic material: that is everything microbial growth needs. A contaminated coil pushes a musty edge into the airflow constantly, strongest at startup.
The fix here is a proper HVAC cleaning that includes the coil and the air handler area, not a duct-only service. If a company quotes you a duct cleaning for a coil problem, they either did not inspect or did not care.
3. Contaminated ductwork
Austin homes mostly run flex duct through unconditioned attics. In summer, that attic sits at 120°F+ while the duct carries 55°F air. Any gap at a joint or tear in the liner lets humid attic air touch cold surfaces, and condensation forms. Moisture plus the dust already inside the duct feeds a thin microbial film, and that film gives off the gases people describe as dirty socks or wet cardboard.

4. A loaded filter that froze the coil
A filter that has not been changed in months restricts airflow across the coil. The coil runs too cold, ices over, then thaws into extra moisture the system was never meant to hold. The smell follows a few weeks later. The fix costs the price of a filter, which is why it is the first thing to rule out. Why does Austin make this problem worse?
Three local conditions stack against you:
- A nine-month cooling season. Your coil stays wet from March into November. Most of the country gets a long dry break; Austin does not.
- High average humidity. More moisture in the air means more condensate moving through the system every day, and more fuel for growth anywhere it stalls.
- Attic ductwork. The dew-point problem described above barely exists in homes with ducts inside conditioned space. Austin builds almost everything through hot attics.

- Change the filter on schedule: every 30 to 45 days in heavy pollen months, every 60 to 90 days otherwise
- Keep indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent
- Have the drain line flushed each spring before the long cooling season
- Fix attic duct leaks; they are a moisture source and an energy leak at the same time
- If the coil has grown mold twice, install UV and stop paying for the same cleaning every year
